A 'Call Out' was made by 2nd Year Students and after not an awful lot of discussion, Jo Dunlop, Sally Brighten and myself decided to sign up as part of this exhibition and collaborate to create a piece. We didn't know what we were going to do but we wanted to make it fun and create something visitors could also try.
Following on from a 1st Year Drawing Workshop at NUA 'De-Familiar Un-Familiar' where we experimented with drawing using less control and by disrupting our normal methods and connection with the paper.
Once we had put a proposal to the 2nd Year Students who were creating the exhibition it was just a case of trying out a few methods. We decided to create x3 drawing implements that would create a series of marks relevant to each of us. I created a helmet with various charcoals attached, Jo made x2 arm pieces and attached pencils and graphite to them and Sally attached a variety of sticks to some knee pads which were dipped in ink and scratched over the surface.
The final piece was 3metres x 1.5metres. Each of us creating a series of marks in line with our implement. We filmed the process, including using a GoPro to record the point of view of the drawing items with the paper.
The marks were varied and also typified each of us in different ways. The height of mine and the density of some of the marks. Jo's were very rhythmical and almost dance like, while Sally's showed the physical struggle to make the marks and get the sticks to react like drawing implements.
When we put the piece up at the exhibition we also wanted visitors to play with the implements and see what marks they could make, so we left the drawing items and a big blank piece of paper to see what would happen.
The film of the creating is below with a YouTube link as well in case you have any issues viewing from here:
