Installing 2Faulty

The idea of showing the 2Faulty output was discussed a while back but it was always going to depend on what space was available. As a collective we discussed different permutations and we knew all five exploding book style zines would hang in one shape or form but we also wanted to incorporate some sound work at the same time, again, if space allowed.

We had two sound elements that we thought might work. The first was a song by Sally in response to one of our 10 minute tasks where she wrote and performed the 'Nithing Song'. A song that included a selection of words from the list of words that have gone out of fashion and the meaning has been lost. The list can be found on a previous blog - '2 Faulty Collective' (https://carldurban.wixsite.com/website/post/2-faulty-collective) We took the recording from the Teams meeting and then I played around with it, purposefully kept the background laughter and ambient noise on, gave it a bit of an echo and depth and we had a piece of sound. Our intention is to play it through a transducer attached to a strange item, we decided on a plant pot. Why not? This would be just about silly enough for us and you could still hear the words when we originally tested it.

Above is the original flower pot and below is the song. We may go even sillier on the plant pot and make it something larger and crazier. It would suit the song and us better.

Sometime when we have been playing with a word we look at the meaning to see how out of or in context we have been using it.

What is the meaning of nithing? - coward, poltroon Definition of nithing 1 obsolete : coward, poltroon. 2 obsolete : niggard.

The other piece was going to be from a session where we had to assume a shape and make an animal noise. Sounds mad and much hilarity was had, especially Jo trying to make the sound of a dolphin while she assumed the shape of a triangle. She failed at both. This was all recorded and we were going to play it through a welly boot via a transducer but on reflection we have decided to each speak one of our Dada poems that were created by each reading a random line from different books but all from page 210, which is our combined age. Using this method we have created some very intriguing pieces, some have a flow, make sort of sense and have a certain rhythm. These have all been spoken, recorded and will be played through a transducer that is attached to a pile of the books we have used, thereby making the words come from the books. On discussion with Dr Philip Archer we could take this even further another time and each line could be an mp3 file, which we then upload onto an iPod and set it to shuffle and repeat, thereby creating a set of Dada poems automatically. One for the future.

When we come to display this we are intending to use a mirror plinth we have and place the plant on the top with the books in a pile at the base and get both files to play at the same time. Snippets will be heard, missed, misunderstood. Chaos causing more chaos. Very 2Faulty.
