Drawing Workshop - 16 images

Take a large piece a of paper and divide into 16 spaces. Create a non-figurative image in the first space and react to it in the second space and continue. This is exactly the kind of task I react with well, it allows me the freedom to do what I like, create my own parameters and see my body reacts to my eyes and mind as I look at an image and see what I can do to respond to that mark. It is almost primal in the way the body reacts to a previous mark, how connected are the thoughts and the actions.

This workshop also has become a catalyst for other work and developing some pieces into 3D. Very productive.

All sixteen spaces working from top left as the first mark.

By using a variety of techniques and materials I managed to create a selection of different images yet all related to the previous one. I also used charcoal, ink, pencil and paint. Intentionally I also kept everything mono, my restriction, my rules.

After looking at some of the mages I decided to see how they would look if I edited them, just simply adjusting the light balance and then printing as larger pieces on some textured paper.

A smokey texture with very soft grain that is then interrupted by the slight, fine splatter of ink which although is from one of the other images it sits well with this one. It creates a new aspect to the original intention.

More of an etching feel to this image, this is even more evident when seen larger and indeed printed out digitally on watercolour paper.

I am intending to develop at least one of these ideas as a three dimensional image to see how that could work, Also perhaps look at a relief for another one and maybe recreate one as a painting or further drawing iteration.

Virginia Verran ‘Grey-Red (stealth-theft)’ 2010.

I particularly like the etherial feel of Verran's images. Interesting interview with Verran about how she feels about her paintings and what she feels like during the painting and afterwards. Discusses the ideas of 'Not Knowing' which I find fundamental to the way I work. Also the idea of space and the vastness of space and the relationship between the human body and the size of space, metal and flesh. Discusses how she likes to work with either no music or music that is just sound, I do agree, sometimes a piece of music can be distracting, other times it can be inspiring or a companion. How you as an artist you leave your mark behind in history from bodily movement. She discusses how she sees the canvas as a skin, a living thing. An illusion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d9wUGu_BoA
